Homily of December 12, 2014 (in Spanish): Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe [Cardinal Rigali - Podcast]
December 13, 2014
Today we are commemorating the apparition of the Most Holy and Immaculate Virgin Mary to St. Juan Diego, which occurred in Mexico in 1531.
This apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe continues to infuse into our hearts a profound sense of the closeness of the Mother of God.
This event became the first stone of evangelization in the New World. It attracted millions of people to embrace the Catholic faith and in it to find the mercy and love of God and salvation in Jesus Christ, together with the compassionate and constant intercession of the Holy Mother of God.
The young Virgin of Nazareth, whom we find in the Gospel described in her visit of loving concern to her pregnant cousin Elizabeth, is the same Virgin who came to Juan Diego at Tepeyac Hill. She brought him the message of divine love and gave him an urgent mission to participate in evangelization by having a church built where her compassion and love would be experienced.
The grace we ask today is to be active collaborators in the Church's Mission of the new Evangelization and to show forth the transforming love of Christ by living charity.
Meanwhile our Blessed Mother says to us as to St. Juan Diego: "Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let anything disturb you. Am I not here, your Mother? Are you not happily in my embrace? You are my ambassador, very worthy of confidence." Amen.
